U.S.A. — Bar customers who can't smoke in their local taverns may drive farther to find an establishment where they can light up. As a result, they may be driving longer distances under the influence of alcohol to get home, helping to trigger a big increase in drunk-driving fatalities, according to a new study.

The June edition of the Journal of Public Economics said jurisdictions that banned smoking from 2000 to 2005 had, on average, a 13% increase in drunk-driving fatalities the following year.
